mainestreetjazzmen.com  MSJ were formed in the late 1970’s, when they had a residency at the Corner House hotel in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne.  The original members included several founder members of the PANAMA JAZZMEN, who had been one of the North’s leading dixieland jazz bands since the early 1950’s. During this period the band  often accompanied touring UK and American jazz artists in conjunction with JAZZ NORTH EAST.  In 1979 they accompanied trumpeter Wild Bill Davison, clarinettist Peanuts Hucko, saxophonist Jim Galloway, and ex Alex Welsh piano man Fred Hunt. Whilst in 1980 they accompanied pianists Ralph Sutton and Dick Wellstood. Several incarnations of MSJ have appeared over the ensuing years, thanks mainly to Panama Jazzmen pianist Norman Rudd in the 1980’s and more recently to former RIVER CITY JAZZMEN trombonist Herbie Hudson. The current version of M.S.J. have been playing regularly as a unit since 2005, and feature some very experienced North East jazz musicians.  They have gradually established a number of residencies in the Tyneside area, as well as regularly playing the local jazz club venues, where they have become a popular attraction, occasionally being used to support visiting and local guest artists, including ex Alex Welsh trombonist Roy Wiliiams, ex Chris Barber clarinettist John Crocker, reedmen John Hallam & Frank Brooker, and also local guitar virtuoso James Birkett Click on the tabs above to navigate the site - click on INFO buttons for further information  2017
